Have you ever thought about adopting a pet? If so, you've probably visited animal shelters and encountered all kinds of lovely dogs and cats who desperately need a loving home. Some of them come to these sites as puppies and quickly find what they are looking for, but not all are as lucky.
For those animals that are already adults, adoption may take too long, or even never happen. That is why photographer Shaina Fishman and stylist Ryen Blaschke have undertaken an effort to help them through the “Cats in Hats” series.
This project takes a group of cats that live at the Brooklyn Acción Animal shelter and are looking to be adopted, portraying them dressed in hats and fashion accessories designed by Blaschke.
In this way, Maleficent, Harry Potter and even a Minion visited the homes of some shelter volunteers for photo sessions that captivated the screens and hearts of thousands of users on social networks.
For decades, satellite observations have shown that Europe Cell Phone Number List the glaciers of the Amundsen Sea in West Antarctica are losing mass at an accelerated rate and the melting of the ice sheet in that region may have already reached a point of no return. Previous studies had demonstrated the instability of this sea, west of Antarctica, by examining its short-term evolution with numerical models.
A new study, led by scientists at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (Germany), goes a step further and offers a long-term simulation of the evolution of the entire West Antarctic ice sheet.
The results, published in PNAS, confirm that the Amundsen region is unstable. “Our computer models reveal that with the instability of the relatively small Amundsen region, the entire area of the West Antarctic ice sheet will collapse and contribute to a global sea level rise of three meters,” he tells Sinc. Johannes Feldmann, first author of the work.
According to scientists, we may be seeing the beginning of a period of prolonged disintegration of sea ice into the ocean. The local retreat of the ice sheet and its thinning “is very likely to continue in the future,” says Feldmann, who adds that observations over the next few decades will confirm that we are facing a large-scale retreat from this area of Antarctica.
A thaw 'out of control'
Simulations indicate that the region will become destabilized after 60 years of current melt levels. But for the authors, this area is already unstable so this threshold can be quickly exceeded. And if this happens, in the coming centuries a three-meter rise in sea level may be inevitable.
If the results are taken into account on a millennium scale, sea level will rise by one meter during the first 2,000 years. We will reach the eventual three meters in about 10,000 years,” says the German.
